beauty

It's been months since I've posted here! I can't believe it. So of course I think I'll start a new series based on a little quote I thought of the other day:

"perfection is not a requirement of beauty."

That just popped into my head as I was editing and came across this photo that was a hot mess in terms of the "rules" of photography, but it was a favorite from the day.

as we are, with you

new year. new project with this talented group of friends. i'd like my kids to see me in a few pictures someday. among the thousands i have of them, there are very few of me.

a nice shot by my son, Maxwell. (and i'd say he did pretty amazing for using BBF!) it's a simple snapshot really, but what i see is this: it feels like usually one of us can only be in focus at a time in this triad of brother, sister and mother. in this shot it was me which i feel like never happens. that girl putting some snack-food item in her mouth is usually the focal point. heck, she's always the focal point right now. she'll be two a month from today. she requires way too much of my attention most days. and Maxwell, poor kid is always out of the picture, out of shot, behind the scenes. he's off doing something alone. he's still the only child in many ways. man oh man it makes me feel bad. i know i shouldn't feel bad, but i do. i know that as parents we can't do it all for all of our kids all of the time, but i totally would if i could some days.

we'd all be right there in front of the lens: fast shutter speed - no blur, low ISO - no graininess, stopped way down - so we were each clearly seen for who we are.

Every once in awhile I try my hand at free lensing again. I think I'm getting a little better. It's hit or miss most of the time, but I kind of like that.

There's always time in the day for gold fish on the couch. This gal is getting so big! So fast! She just turned 17 months on the 18th. She wants to do what brother does. She's into stuff. She's a bit mischievous. I suppose she can get away with it with those long lashes of hers.

to be, simply, not bad.

"Even if i'm setting myself up for failure, I think it's worth trying to be a mother who delights in who her children are, in their knock-knock jokes and earnest questions. A mother who spends less time obsessing about what will happen, or what has happened, and more time reveling in what is. A mother who doesn't fret over failings and slights, who realizes her worries and anxieties are just thoughts, the continuous chattering and judgement of a too busy mind. A mother who doesn't worry so much about being bad or good but just recognizes that she's both, and neither. A mother who does her best, and for whom that is good enough, even if, in the end, her best turns out to be, simply, not bad."

Oh, I'm late again. As usual. ha ha! I took these photos tonight while brother and dad were at Max's baseball game. I gave her a few chips and we went out on the back porch. She loves to be outside. LOVES it. I'm in trouble once she can walk and figures out how to unlock the front door. Watch out world! Here comes my silly, chip-eating, baby girl.

A few friends and I are setting out on a new project this year. We decided to use the above quote as a sort of guide for our posts. The message in this quote is so simple, and quite clear. So we will gather together once a month and tell about our lives with pictures. I hope you'll join us on this journey.

My husband's annual company meeting was in San Francisco this past weekend, so naturally I decided I just had to go with him. I had been to San Francisco back in my early twenties with a college friend. We did all the really touristy things back then, and this time I just wanted to walk around and experience the city and just look at all there is to see down there. Maybe I've been away from Seattle for too long, but man, SF is just so huge. I had forgotten what it was like to be in a big, metropolitan city. It was great! The people, the noise, the sirens, the constant honking of horns (when there was clearly no place for the car in front to go) - just so much to take in. Portland is pretty tame compared to SF. It was so refreshing! The most interesting part of the walking we did - China Town. In fact that's the only place I took photos. (I only lugged around my heavy D700 + 35mm for one day - what a beast!)

So here you go - Living a Life: China Town, San Francisco.
